Mokau Community Nursing services

Hauora Taranaki PHO has provided Mokau Community Nursing services via a subcontract arrangement with incumbent Registered Nurse Patsy Bodger since February 2004. The service includes local clinics three mornings a week from 9.00am to 11.00am and home visits where required outside of these hours.

Working closely with local key community groups/people i.e. tangata whenua, Kaumatua, St Johns Ambulance, businesses, police and fire brigade Patsy and her locum nurse (who fills the position when Patsy in on holiday or study leave) ensures that there is great community collaboration around the services that are available to this remote community, the boundaries extends from the Awakino tunnel in the north, Waikawau in the West and to Mt Messenger in the South.

Referrals to the nursing service are received from GP services (Waitara, New Plymouth); Maternity unit and wards at Taranaki Base Hospital; teachers from local primary schools, whanau and self referrals. The response time for each referral is made within two days following receipt of referrals. Outgoing referrals are made to other health professionals for medical interventions. These include GP's and emergency services at TDHB and after hours emergency services.

Patsy provides generalist District Nursing services such as wound care management, injections and diagnostic testing e.g. blood tests and assessments and monitoring of health status including health education. Her home visits include palliative care and other services where the patient is unable to come to her clinic in the Mokau town ship.

She visits the local schools, Whareorino, Mokau and Ahititi primary schools and the Waikawau Playgroup providing education and clinical advice to both teachers and pupils. She also works with many Organisations outside of Mokau District including the Taranaki District Health Board District Nurses & Public Health Nurses, the Hospice, Access Ability, WINZ, and ACC - this also includes participating in the local campaigns facilitated by ACC and the Police.

Inglewood Community Nursing Service

This service supports clients remaining in their own community by providing nursing services in the clients own home, or at the clinic based in Inglewood. Services include generalist nursing and specialist nursing including managing complex wound care, Intravenous therapy, palliative care and ACC.

A team of highly skilled Registered Nurses; Wendy, Penny, Annie manage and co-ordinate the service with the aim of providing support to people with short, long term or chronic health problems encouraging self care and independence, improving access to services, allowing for earlier discharge from hospital, preventing avoidable hospital admissions and allowing patient and family a choice to be cared for in their own community.
